TARGET AUDIENCES
Today I began to research how brands target certain audiences. This is all to prepare for
creating my own audience profile for my GCSE Production. In addition to my audience profile I need to make a structured plan which further researches my audience.
Distributing my film includes many factors so I will need to develop an effective way to market my movie. This includes using forms of social media, for example creating a Facebook page and Twitter account. This enables me to promote and connect to the target audience. I will need multiple marketing strategies in order to make it more effective. For further investigation after my audience profile, I will also research why my target audience enjoys and does certain leisure activities. I need to discover what they like and how to make my film more attractive to them.

Developing a thorough
understanding of my audience is essential. GEARS
is an acronym which allows us to define an audience:

and my audience is likely to consume other forms of media too, such as radio or
television. When I am marketing my film I want to make is as accessible as
possible to my audience.
My target audience utilises the internet to gain more information on film releases. For example, my friends and I (who fit into my target audience bracket) find out more about new films by accessing: imDB; twitter; instagram; facebook; iTunes movie trailers and cinema websites, such as Odeon.

As most media marketing is very visual, I decided to
research radio. Kiss FM is a suitable media platform as “KISS 100 continues to
successfully hit the mark with its young London target audience, reaching more
15-34s than any radio station in London.” This fits perfectly with my target
audience.

Audience
behaviour is divided into models. There are several models, passive and active
are two which construct audiences in contrasting ways. The Media Effects model (or hypodermic syringe model) is the
passive model. This is where audiences are very easily influenced by the media
they consume; therefore, constructing the audience as passive. Whereas an active
audience has more say in the media they are consuming and make active choices.
The Uses
and Gratifications model display these four needs:

HORROR FILMS
Eleanor and I
discussed researching into psychological thriller and mental illnesses to
determine which to use for our main character Erica. Eleanor did further research
following up on the Scoop it work and I researched a couple more Art of the
Title opening sequences. “I wanted to conduct some more research into the
genre, surrounding the issue of multiple personality disorder (MPD) in the main
character, because this is what we want our main character to have. Multiple
personality disorder is defined as: ‘a rare dissociative disorder in which two
or more personalities with distinct memories and behaviour patterns apparently
exist in one individual’. In our film, this is what causes Erica’s sudden
change in mood and causes her to go from a harmless young girl to a merciless
killer within seconds. Erica’s change is triggered by a flashback in our film
to a time when she was bullied.”

HALF TERM WORK
31/10/14 | PRODUCTION | FILMING
During
the most recent half term Eleanor, Harriet and I met up to film some shots for
our project. We used a Canon D60 camera which was borrowed from school and a
tripod in order to create professional looking shots. We did some short shots
from the beginning and ending of our three minute film. These were all shot in
Eleanor’s bedroom with Erica (Eleanor) acting as an innocent child going to
bed. Then we filmed the part where it appears that Erica jumps out her window.
I did Eleanor’s make up which made her features more defined and skeletal.
Eleanor decided on the costumed and helped arrange the room. Harriet did the
most of the filming. I also directed quite a few shots along with the help of
Harriet and Eleanor. We began filming around 12:30pm and finished roughly 4
hours later. We successfully got the shots we wanted and were happy with what
we achieved.

Today we consulted the
Art of Title website and watched two title sequences of the ‘thriller’ and
action genre. The Conjuring and Pacific Rim both allowed us to see and decide
on an appropriate order to for the opening credits. We listed the order in
which we would like to have our film credits which goes as follows:

FILM DISTRIBUTORS

Today we
consulted the Launching Films website and watched a video by the Film Distributors
Association. The video focused on the job of a distributor and the work of
distribution companies. The video discusses promotion, distribution, production
and also mentions exhibitors, publicists and directors. It also briefly goes
over marketing campaigns and the target audiences’ reactions. We decided
that Momentum Pictures would be our distribution company as they aren’t as
large as other companies, such as, Warner Bros, but are still a recognised
household name. They make more niche market movies as well as successful
blockbusters and thrillers which makes them perfect for our target audience.

TREATMENT
This is our first draft of our treatment. We are pondering and still deciding on details; such as names of the characters. We have plenty of ideas but this is the main bulk of our story:
10/9/14 | PLANNING | TREATMENT
MAIN GIRL, approximately 12 years old, unnaturally pale with an unhinged look in her eyes, dark circles, tired, sits stiff and upright on a bed in a psychiatric ward in hospital. She is looking straight ahead while a voice-over of discussion between her PARENTS and the DOCTOR about the girl's mental health history and her future in the ward. The doctor recommends she is not released but her parents insist.
Then a cross cut to a large, wooden desk lit dimly lit with desk lamp scattered with early release forms, health records telling her history and there is the sound of a heart thumping, slowly increasing in rate and volume. The forms are revealing that main girl suffers from multiple personality disorder. The early release forms have main girl’s names and details all over them. Desk lamp is turn off really suddenly and the screen goes pitch black and the heart beat sound is extremely fast and loud, then the screen goes bright artificial white and the title comes up in black text.
Mid shot in main girl’s bedroom with her acting innocent, being put to bed, reading in bed and parents leaving her room, light being turned off and saying goodnight. As soon as they have left main girl sneaks out of bed, stuffs a pillow under the duvet to mimic a person sleeping, pockets a weapon and climbs out of her window.
Cross cut to a YOUNG GIRL, approximately 9 years old, big brown, innocent eyes, hair up, being bullied by two OLDER GIRLS, approximately 15. Main girl sees this as she is wandering the streets in her nightwear and has a flashback to a time in her recent childhood when she was bullied herself. This triggers her anger and then forces an attack,Young girl sees Eleanor over the other girls' shoulders, gets frightened and runs away to hide behind a car. Eleanor starts following and stalking the two girls before killing them. We hear the struggle and see the young girl's panicked face as the two other girls are being murdered. We see one of the girls reached to their neck to try and stop the main girl from strangling her but fails. A shot of the dead girls and you see their necks with red scars from the wire.
Cross cut to main girl climbing back through her window, going to an en suite bathroom and washing off the any blood and dirt, staring at herself in the bathroom mirror and creepily smiles. Sudden stop to black.
